Gut microbiome test

Stool kit, collected at home

A comprehensive stool test that maps your gut bacteria, checks for parasites, yeasts and viruses, and measures inflammation and digestion markers. Collected at home, posted to the lab, read with me.

If you get bloating that arrives every afternoon, bowels that swing between extremes, reflux, skin that flares for no clear reason, and the usual tests have all come back clear, this is quite often the next step I suggest. It’s NutriPath’s GI-Standard Microbiome Profile (test code 2206), a single stool sample you collect at home.

The report counts your beneficial species, shows whether opportunistic bacteria, parasites or yeasts have taken up room, and then looks at how your gut is actually functioning: pancreatic enzyme output, fat digestion, gut immune activity and inflammation. That functional section is often where the useful information sits.

There's an advanced version that adds culture and susceptibility testing, and a food antibody panel you can add on. Most people are really well served by the standard profile. But if you're unsure, pick that one and I'll check it suits you before I place the order.

Who it suits

Who this test is for

  • IBS-type symptoms: bloating, cramping, bowels that swing between loose and constipated
  • Reflux or indigestion that hasn't settled
  • A gut that never came right after travel, food poisoning or a course of antibiotics
  • Skin conditions like eczema, acne or rosacea with a gut component
  • Fatigue or brain fog alongside gut symptoms
  • Hormonal symptoms where I want to see how oestrogen is being recycled
  • Before we start work on your gut, so the plan is based on what's actually there

Before you order

A few things I’ll check with you

  • Antibiotics or antifungals in the last two weeks will skew the result. We'd wait.
  • Probiotics, digestive enzymes, laxatives, anti-inflammatories and some herbs are usually paused for a few days before collection. I'll go through your list with you.
  • Collection is done Monday to Wednesday so the sample reaches the lab fresh, and it stays in the fridge until you post it.
  • Eat normally in the two days before. This isn't a fasting test.
  • If you've had blood in your stool, unexplained weight loss or severe pain, see your GP first. This test isn't for that.

What you get

What the report covers

Beneficial bacteria

Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus, Akkermansia, Faecalibacterium and the broad balance of phyla that make up a healthy microbiome.

Opportunistic and pathogenic bacteria

Around 40 species including H. pylori and its virulence factors, Klebsiella, Clostridium difficile toxins, Salmonella, Campylobacter and methane-producing archaea.

Parasites, worms and yeasts

Blastocystis, Dientamoeba, Giardia, Cryptosporidium and other parasites, plus Candida and other fungi.

Viruses

Norovirus, rotavirus, adenovirus, astrovirus and sapovirus.

Digestion markers

Pancreatic elastase for enzyme output, steatocrit for fat digestion, and beta-glucuronidase, which affects how oestrogen is recycled through the gut.

Inflammation and gut immunity

Calprotectin, secretory IgA, zonulin (gut permeability), occult blood and anti-tissue transglutaminase IgA, which relates to gluten.

Short-chain fatty acids

Butyrate, acetate and propionate, the compounds your bacteria produce when they're fed well.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between the standard and advanced tests?

The standard profile uses PCR, which detects the DNA of each organism and tells us how much is there. The advanced profile does that and also grows the bacteria and yeasts in culture, then tests what they respond to. That susceptibility panel is handy when we already know something is there and want to choose treatment carefully. I usually start with the standard one.

Is this a SIBO test?

No, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth is tested with a breath test, a stool test looks at the large intestine. The two can sit alongside each other and I can talk you through which fits your symptoms.

Is collecting the sample awkward?

A bit, but it's straightforward. The kit has everything you need and clear instructions, and NutriPath has a short video showing the steps. You collect at home on a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday and post it the same day.

How long until I get results?

Usually 7 to 10 business days after the lab receives your sample. They come to me first. I'll email you to book your consultation as soon as they land.

Can I do this test for my child?

There's a version built for children, with markers and ranges chosen for their age. See the children's gut microbiome test.

Do I need to be on the Gold Coast?

No. The kit is posted anywhere in Australia and our consultation is over video.
