Acupuncture for women’s health

A lot of women come to us because they know something’s off with their cycle but they’ve been told their blood work is fine. Or they’ve been given the pill and told that’ll sort it. Sometimes it does. But when it doesn’t, or when you want to understand what’s actually going on underneath, that’s where we spend a lot of time in clinic.

We look at the full picture - cycle length, ovulation signs, the quality of each phase, where symptoms cluster. Because a period that’s late every month is different from one that’s short. Pain at ovulation is different from pain on day one. That specificity matters for how we approach a session.

Fertility acupuncture on the Gold Coast

Fertility is an area where we see a lot of women who are partway through an IVF cycle, or preparing for one, or who’ve had a cycle that didn’t work and are trying to understand what to do next. We work alongside your fertility specialist. Acupuncture is used as a support alongside IVF - the timing around transfers and procedures matters, and we coordinate around your clinic’s protocol.

For women trying to conceive naturally, the focus tends to be on cycle regularity, ovulation, and the luteal phase - that second half of the cycle where progesterone needs to hold up long enough to support implantation.

PCOS

PCOS is one of the most common things we see, and it tends to present quite differently from woman to woman. Some have irregular or absent cycles. Some have the classic blood sugar disregulation - that energy crash after meals, the craving for carbs, the weight that shifts more easily to the middle. Acupuncture is used alongside dietary and lifestyle changes as part of a broader approach to cycle regularity and nervous system support. We also work closely with Hannah, our in-house naturopath, for women who want to combine acupuncture with herbal medicine or functional testing.

Endometriosis

Endo is one of those conditions that tends to get dismissed for years before someone actually looks into it properly. The pain can be really significant, and it often doesn’t respond the way you’d expect to standard pain relief. Acupuncture is something we use alongside your specialist’s care as additional support. A lot of women with endo tell us that having regular sessions makes the day-to-day more manageable.

Perimenopause and menopause

The lead-up to menopause can start years before your period stops, and for some women the symptoms in that window are quite significant. Hot flushes, waking up at 2am, mood changes, brain fog that you can’t quite pin to anything specific. Acupuncture is used to support women through that transition - it’s a slow process and treatment tends to be ongoing over that period.

Pregnancy

During pregnancy, we see women for a range of things: nausea and general health for mum and bub throughout the first trimester, pelvic girdle pain and lower back ache in the later months, breech presentation from around 34-36 weeks (using moxibustion), and labour preparation from 37 weeks. We check in with your midwife or OB before we start, particularly in the later stages.

Postpartum

The fourth trimester is something we take seriously. Recovery after birth, especially a difficult one, that takes longer than most people expect. We see women for postpartum depletion (that bone-tired, nothing-left-in-the-tank feeling that’s more than just broken sleep), pain recovery, and the mood shifts that come with major hormonal changes after delivery.

Your first appointment

The initial consultation runs for around an hour. We take a full health history, not just the main reason you’ve booked, but sleep, digestion, stress levels, cycle patterns, and anything else that gives us a picture of how things are sitting for you overall.

From there we’ll talk through what we’re thinking, what we’re going to work on in the session, and what to expect. Then we do the acupuncture. Most people are surprised by how relaxed they feel on the table.

At the end we’ll give you a sense of how many sessions we’d suggest for your situation. That varies. Something acute can shift in two or three sessions. Something like fertility support or PCOS management tends to be a longer commitment over several months, and we’re upfront about that so you know what you’re getting into.

Follow-up appointments are typically 45-60 minutes.

Appointments are booked online or by phone.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • If used correctly acupuncture is a safe and relatively painless treatment. The needles used are much thinner than the needles used for injections or blood tests, most are 0.14mm thick, similar thickness to a strand of human hair. Most people report feeling little to no pain during the insertion of the needles. You may feel a slight pinch or prick, followed by a sensation of dull pressure or warmth around the needle.

Some people may experience a slight ache, tingling, or heaviness around the needle insertion site, but this sensation usually fades within a few minutes and is totally safe. Rarely, some individuals may experience mild bruising, bleeding, or soreness at the site of needle insertion.

If you are considering acupuncture and have concerns about pain or discomfort, it is important to discuss these concerns with Conor. He can work with you to ensure that you are comfortable during the procedure and can adjust the treatment as necessary to minimize any discomfort.

  • For acute conditions, such as a recent injury or illness, more frequent treatments may be necessary initially, such as one to two times per week for a few weeks. Chronic conditions, such as ongoing pain or stress, may require regular weekly or bi-weekly treatments for an extended period.

Ultimately, the frequency and duration of acupuncture treatments will depend on the individual's unique health needs, goals, and response to the therapy. Conor can work with you to develop a personalised treatment plan that is tailored to your specific needs and goals.

  • Ideally, you should wear clothing that can be easily rolled up or down, such as a loose-fitting shirt and pants or shorts. Avoid tight-fitting clothing, as this can make it difficult for the acupuncturist to access the areas being treated. Additionally, avoid wearing heavy jewellery or accessories that may interfere with the treatment.

  • If you have a private health plan that covers acupuncture you can claim a portion of your consult back. We have a HICAPS terminal in the clinic so you can claim on the spot! Medicare is not the same as private health, unfortunately you can not claim any portion on your treatment back with medicare.
